Catland Ltd was founded on July 10th 2017 by founders Tomi Toikka, Anssi Koskenranta and Tommi Vuori. Catland aims to create games that embrace insanity – wacky experiences that make players think “what the hell are we playing right now”. Our games are for PC, consoles and virtual reality platforms.
Catland was named after a city district in Tampere called Kissanmaa, where the CEO Tomi Toikka had a pretty comfortable apartment once.
The Catland team consists of a ragtag band of game developers. The CEO of Catland Tomi Toikka has worked on everything from web development to marketing and game design. Founder, chairman of the board and lead programmer Anssi Koskenranta along with founder and lead programmer Tommi Vuori met with Tomi in a bar at 2 AM and have been developing games ever since. To this date, all Catland employees have been hired after a night out at the tavern – which either tells a cautionary tale of Finnish night life or speaks volumes about legendary Finnish antisocial tendencies.
Catland was part of batch one of Nordic XR Startups (formerly Nordic VR Startups) during which time the company got amazing business advice and great mentoring – introducing Catland to the Finnish games industry formally for the first time.
Catland released its first title Taphouse VR on Steam October 17th 2017. The VR exclusive bartending simulator made in just four months with three team members went onto scoring a 96% positive Steam rating, international acclaim and continues to receive regular content updates. It’s prolonged success speaks volumes about the power of virtual reality.
On February 2018, the Catland team started working on its next title, The Spy Who Shrunk Me; a spy adventure game starring Audrey Smoothspy, a superagent armed with a shrink ray. The game would feature an exciting Cold War setting with stealth gameplay featuring mechanics like dropping banana peels to make guards slip, plopping shrunken guards down toilets and shrinking yourself to the size of an ant.
On August 15th 2018, The Spy Who Shrunk Me was officially announced to the world with a Fall 2018 release date for both PC and VR. Catland also confirmed it had secured its seed funding round led by legendary Finnish game developers and investors from Sisu Game Ventures and Business Finland.
On December 18th 2018, The Spy Who Shrunk Me was released on Steam to international acclaim. The narrative adventure continues to get regular content updates featuring new missions, gadgets and ports to new platforms such as virtual reality.
Next up? Catland has started working on the next big thing™…

In Taphouse VR, you are the bartender! Pour glasses, mugs and shots of all kinds of beverages to thirsty dwarves. Mix and match recipes to make drinks that dazzle your patrons. Be careful with your customers – some will get angry if served the wrong thing or if you take your time. Get ready to break up some fights as well! With an exciting cast of drunk dwarves and a cast of lovely drinking holes to work in you’ll get to experience what it truly feels like to be a tavernkeep. And when your mind starts to wander, play the slot machine or throw out some troublemakers!
Note: While Taphouse VR is a perfect entry point for VR, we highly recommend it for older audiences. There’s lots of alcohol, dwarves passing out and even some mild fisticuffs about – VR responsibly.
